-------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 WELCOME:
This is the second newsletter from Archive CD Books Canada. This newsletter will be published whenever we have enough information to make it worth your while reading but we expect that will mean there will be about one a month.
While this isn't a 'mail list' we expect it to contain items of general interest so we will welcome input from you. Send your input to: info@archivecdbooks.ca and please try and include 'newsletter' in the title. (Now for the heavy bit: We will be the final arbiters of what gets into the newsletter and what doesn't. We will only accept "suitable" input of a general nature, not anything which should be on one of the many topic specific lists.)
2 WHAT'S IN THE NEWSLETTER:
This Newsletter will always provide a list of our latest Canadian releases together with a description of what's in them. We will also be providing a cut-down version of this list for publication in the Global Archive CD Books Newsletter published by Rod Neep from the UK. Sorry for the repetition if you receive both newsletters but we want to give everyone a chance to see what's available.
In each issue we will try to give you a 'heads-up' on new books we are working to release soon. I'm not promising we'll always do this, or that we'll stick to it if we do, because we need to be able to respond to changes in circumstance as they occur and we may have to put some other projects on-hold as a result.
We have received our first batch of titles from the Australian partners. There were already a couple of Australian titles you may have seen in our catalogue but this is the whole backlog since their opening. Some really interesting titles if you have family from "Down-under."
3 FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY'S ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Our offer to publish notification of Family History Society events still stands. We have had a fantastic response to this newsletter so your announcement will reach interested parties all over the country.
We have been talking to the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa (BIFHSGO) and will be supporting their annual meeting in September with a number of special and exciting items. Check out the BIFHSGO web site at http://www.bifhsgo.ca / for all the details of their activities and plan to attend their September meeting. More details of our involvement as things get settled.
If you want to have your Family History Societies events listed send an e-mail to info@archivecdbooks.ca containing the wording to be included (we'll try not to edit it but no promises.) To keep things simple we will only publish your notice once for each e-mail received.
4 NEWS & GOSSIP:
We are very gratified at the number of you who have taken the time to subscribe to this news letter but remember there's room for plenty more :-)
We've had a successful month collecting new materials for publication and we're very excited about a couple of our finds. We bought a bundle of books from someone who was moving and couldn't take their genealogy library with them. :-(
In the bundle was a large set of very complete and nicely written family histories, all privately published back in the early 1950's by a gentleman signing himself Geoffrey Gilbert, but who we now know was Philip Geoffrey Brittain Gilbert who died in Victoria BC on 21 December 1977. (Thank you Stella!) We also know he had two daughters, Cynthia Jean and Diana Holton but (so far) we haven't been able to trace either one of them. If anyone can help us to get into contact with either of these ladies we would be most grateful and hopefully we will then be able publish the great information in these volumes to everyone's advantage. BTW, there's a free CD in it for anyone who gives us a successful lead!
We are hearing that the Irish Archive CD Books Partnership is opening next, which will be good news for those of you researching Irish ancestors. You'll have to be patient though, we know first hand how much time and effort is involved! It doesn't happen overnight.
Remember this Newsletter is as much for you guys as it is for us so if you think we're missing something important drop me a line to malcolm@archivecdbooks.ca .
Newsletters work best when they get a good circulation. We're doing our best to let people know about it but you could help us along by mentioning it to your genealogy buddies and generally spreading the word.

* Welland County Minutes 1936
Product No. CA0027: $23.00

Consisting of five separate session reports it is a compilation of various departmental reports, financial records and reprints of letters received by the council. There is even a letter from a gentleman, giving notice that he intends to sue the council for the damages caused to his automobile by the poor state of repair of a particular road. Nothing changes!
The December report lists all the people who have bought various licenses to permit them to conduct their trade including Auctioneers, Junk and Second Hand Dealers and Poultry Transportation Permits.
* A book of 189 Calendars for AD 1752 to 1940 inc.
Product No. CA0055: $9.50
This is a book every genealogist needs, and its priced right price too!
The book's Introduction explains why, and how, the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar was made in England in 1752 when, at the same time, the start of the year was moved from the 25 March to the 1 January. The first of the calendars shown in the book is for the year 1752 where it can be seen that in September, Wednesday 2nd is immediately followed by Thursday 14th.
To round out this little gem of a book the author, a well known figure in Montreal and member of a leading family of Montreal lawyers, included a listing of the Officers of the Canadian governments and what he terms a Chronology of Business. Today we'd call these business biographies and they will provide valuable information to anyone researching an ancestor who operated one of these businesses. There are many advertisements for Canadian business including, of course, many firms of lawyers.
* The Century Cyclopedia of Names
Product No. CA0068: $35.00
While the Century Company was compiling it's Dictionary in the late 1800's it decided to draw all the proper name references it found into a separate appendix to be included in the last of the dictionary's eight volumes. When they completed the dictionary they found that the appendix of names was so large it justified a complete volume of it's own. Consequently the first edition of the Cyclopedia of Names, for the single year of 1894, was published as a stand alone book. This is the edition of the book which has been reproduced here.
We are told there are over 25,000 name entries and from it's weight alone that's easy to believe! Measuring 34 cm high by 25 cm wide and its 1085 pages making it over 6 cm thick, it is certainly one of our largest and heaviest books.
The names in the book are from all sources, all countries as well as from both fact and fiction although being an American publisher there may be some bias. Each entry provides a pronunciation guide and an etymology giving either: the earliest recognized use or, the life facts if it is a person. This will be an invaluable source of personal chronology if you were researching one of the characters cited.
* The Pioneers of Old Ontario
Product No. CA0050: $23.00
This book entirely lives up to it's title. It originated as the byproduct of the work of William Loe Smith, a reporter who was sent out to collect stories on current rural conditions for publication in The Weekly Star beginning in 1897. In conversation with the people he came into contact with while gathering this information, however, he began to hear stories and first hand accounts of the very beginning of the settlement of Ontario. Fortunately for us he decided to record these stories so we, today, can relive some of the original pioneer experiences in the words of those who lived through the events.
A great many of the original pioneers' names are mentioned in this book, but given in the context of how they lived their lives rather than as a cold, impersonal, statistical listing. The stories are grouped by the areas in which they occurred and so many of the original settlement towns and districts are also mentioned and, sometimes, described. There is a full index of names in the book and these names can be found by clicking on the More information link below. The stories are illustrated with over 70 black and white drawings including a portrait of Mr. C. F. Doherty who's father refused a section of land because it was too low and wet. That land is now bounded by Queen, Yonge, University Av. and College streets in the center of Toronto!

Giving information such as their full name, date and place of birth, and a history of their occupation/s and as to why they are 'noted' now. The entries vary in length from a paragraph to a few pages. This is very valuable information. The second part of this book is the Dictionary of Dates. This has a listing of topics (such as Aborigines, Adelaide, Aquatic, Australian Agricultural Co., Caterpillar Plague, Charitable Institutions, Church of England, Coal etc), then under each topics there is a listing of events in date order, that have happened relating to that topic.
High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book. Information about the towns and villages within the county. Its inhabitants by name and address, together with their occupations. A wealth of information and a snapshot in time.
