We have released three great new Canadian books this month all on the Canadian military / Great War (WW1) theme.
These three valuable books have been loaned to us by Chris Wight. Chris has joined Marc Leroux to undertake the mammoth task of making a biographical database of all the Canadians who took part in The Great War. This work will be underway for a long time, but the current data base contents have been made available and can be found at :
http://www.canadianGreatWarProject.com / Please visit their site so they know their work is being appreciated.
* Official History of the Canadian Forces in The Great War
CA0098: $45.00
This is a very detailed and comprehensive account of the activities starting at the week before the outbreak of war and telling the story of the raising of the 1st Canadian Contingent, it's training and the actions it fought. It concludes with the formation of the Canada Corps. and the landing of the 2nd contingent on 13th September 1915. Its the earlier of two significant Official Histories sanctioned by the (then) Canadian Ministry of National Defense.
Being published 23 years after the August 1914 - September 1915 period covered, it does not quite have the 30 years of perspective normally recommended for objective histories but, on the other hand, it does have the advantage of a more contemporary viewpoint, preparation for its publication having started in 1921. Col. Duguid had plans for a series of such Volumes, each dealing with an identifiable period of the Canadian involvement plus five specific topic volumes. Unfortunately the project was interrupted and permanently deferred by the outbreak of the 2nd World War.
The author, Colonel A. Fortescue Duguid D.S.O., B.Sc., R.C.A., held the position of Director of the Historical Section of the General Staff and so was ideally situated to obtain and make reference to all the official records, and this he has certainly done.
The Volume is divided into two books, the first containing the substance of the history while the second is dedicated to reprints of 850 official records, messages, reports as well as 14 maps showing the topography and troop dispositions at critical points in the activities. The Main volume also contains eight pull out maps, a frontispiece showing the Western Theatre and a timeline chart showing the "Employment of Canadian Formations" during the period August 1914 to September 1915.
The CD contains a complete copy of the original text of this book, including all the maps, footnotes, references to the appendices and - of course - all of the appendix volume. (There is also a separate folder containing the 14 large separate maps, segmented so they can be printed on a normal size printer.)
The text is completely computer searchable and we have additionally book marked major milestones in the book such as Chapter headings. These features, in conjunction with the extensive contents lists and the 44 pages of index provided by Colonel Duguid, make this an eminently accessible resource for anyone researching Canadian military activities during the early part of the Great War.
* The War Book of Upper Canada College, Toronto (1914-1919) Published 1923
CA0099: $23.00
This book was intended to identify all the "Old Boys" of the prestigious Upper Canada College who participated in "The Great War" of 1914-1918. Those who gave their lives are commemorated in a separate section but for every "Old Boy" identified there is a short biography and the majority also have a photographic portrait.
The book does not give an exact number of Old Boys recorded but we estimate it to be in the order of 1100. In addition to the biographies, which take up most of the book's 322 pages, there are also lists of Decorations, Honours and Distinctions earned and a chronological list of entries into the college over the period from 1861 through 1918.
The book is fully searchable using Adobe Reader, even down to the name captions on the photographic portraits.
This is a hard to come by source of biographical information of ex students of this historic and prestigious educational establishment.
* The Royal Montreal Regiment, 14th Battalion, C. E. F. 1914-1925
CA0100: $28.00
A complete and detailed history of the 14th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force starting with it's formation in August 1914 from the: 1st Regiment (Canadian Grenadier Guards), 3rd Regiment (Victoria Rifles) and 65th Regiment (Carabiniers de Mont-Royal) through to its reorganization in 1920 when it was combined with the Westmount Rifles to become The Royal Montreal Regiment. Thus, this is a history of the activities of the 14th Battalion through the Great War of 1914 - 18, in which it took an active and decisive part.
The author, R. C. Fetherstonhaugh, was given access to many official records in the writing of this history and he has done a great job in organizing and tabulating the factual data so that it is easy to find and understand.
But that isn't to say this is a dry book of facts. Far from it! Mr. Fetherstonhaugh has an interesting and understandable writing style which brings these cold hard facts to life and gives us a true insight into the lives of the members of the Battalion as they lived through this terrible ordeal. But yet again, he manages to inject a note of humor now and again. His description of a "cheery little game" invented by the members of the Battalion, at the top of page 10, is bound to bring a smile to the face of the reader.
There are 21 photographs, many taken on the battlefield, and 6 sketch maps illustrating the campaigns, amongst the 334 pages of this book. The book also contains 6 appendices giving the Honor Role, Honors and Awards received (2 categories), Commissions, the Battalion's Itinerary and the statistics. Reading it will reward the reader with a rare insight into what it was like to be a Canadian soldier taking part in The Great War.
The book is fully searchable using Adobe Reader, which will be of great assistance to anyone researching a specific person since many members of the battalion are mentioned by name within the text as well as appearing in the appendix lists.
4 COMING SOON:
* The Ottawa City Directory - 1926
This is on the scanner right now. Couldn't quite get it finished in time for this newsletter but it certainly should be released by early in the new year.
* Faugh-a-ballagh song book - 1899
We are still working with the book owners Father to see if we can add the names of some more of the music to which the songs were sung. We will bring you this very interesting publication as soon as we can.
We're still discussing what should be next. We have acquired a number of really interesting books recently. I'm leaning towards a Nova Scotia Biographical record but then we've just received some "prairie provinces" history books and we find so little on that area. Decisions, decisions ! :-)

BRITISH BOOKS - NEW RELEASES:
* Kelly's Directory of Cheshire 1923
GB1283: $35.30
A late and very comprehensive directory including street directories for Birkenhead and Chester. This means it lists every house, the occupants and their trades, fabulous resources for family historians.
Unfortunately due to wear and tear there are pages with corners missing in the Birkenhead street directory. However the majority of the directory is fine. The pages feel soft, almost like material from their years of use, but they have been carefully scanned and are easy to read and search on CD.
* Kelly's Directory of Cheshire 1910
GB1285: $35.30
As with all late directories this is very comprehensive and has lots of information about each of the places, their facilities and demographics as well as lists of private residents and their trades.
Includes a street directory of Birkenhead and Chester
* Kelly's Directory of Cheshire 1896
GB1286: $27.80
A very comprehensive directory including, a street directory of Birkenhead and Chester. That means you can easily locate your ancestor, see where they lived, what their trade was and who else lived in the area. It's surprising how often you can find other relatives in the area! A highly valuable resource for Cheshire researchers.
This directory, kindly loaned to the project by Birkenhead Central Library, has been well thumbed over the years resulting in some pages being torn and some corners missing. The book has been carefully restored by the library and Archive CD Books is delighted to be able to produce this directory on CD to increase it's accessibility to family historians and to ensure no further damage to the original need occur. The pages have been scanned with the utmost care so each one is readable. However occasionally some entries in the Birkenhead section are missing where the page has eroded slightly.
* Slaters Directory of Cheshire 1888
GB1287: $27.80
An enormous directory containing a vast amount of useful information for Cheshire researchers. Amazingly it contains street by street, house by house listings (including the names and trades of residents) for the following areas,
Altrincham, Chester, Dunkinfield, Hyde, Macclesfield, Sale, Stockport, Heaton Norris and District, Stalybridge and District.
Sadly due to constant usage some pages for the Altrincham and Birkenhead area are missing corners. The rest is in good condition and can easily be read and searched.
This book was kindly loaned to the project by Birkenhead Central Library.
* Kelly's Directory of Cheshire 1906
GB1284: $27.80
Another late and comprehensive directory for Cheshire listing residents and their trades. It also includes a large amount of information about each place in the county, it's facilities and demographics.
Includes a street directory for Birkenhead and Chester.
* The History of Wellington
GB1277: $27.80
As far as we know this is the first ever History of Wellington. Wellington hasn't been the scene of many great battles or great commercial growth but as the author puts it is the secene of many more "peaceful triumphs". This is a thorough history of the place which describes the various names and spellings of the place, it's very early history, the town's manorial history and it's presence in Domesday, Civil War, Ecclesiastical, Nonconformist, Industrial and Modern history. It also includes many family and personal histories. Most useful to family historians will be the Baptisms, Marriages and Burials 1684 - 1812.
A must for those with ancestors from Wellington
* Songs of Life
GB1298: $13.40
A very sweet book with charming colour pictures and songs from the 19th and 20th century.
* Scotland and England - John Stoddard's Lectures
GB1299: $35.30
John Stodard gave lectures on many subjects which he then turned into a series of fifteen volumes , this is the ninth volume containing his views on Scotland, England and London. It is beautifully illustrated with black and white sketches and photographs of places and people of interest. The text describes the history of each place in an enthusiastic tone. This CD provides a veritable tour around Scotland and England, re-telling some of its most fascinating stories from the past.
John Stoddard's Lectures Canada, Malta & Gibraltar Product No. CA0037-X2 may be found in the Catalogue under Canada:All Canada.
DUTCH BOOKS - COMING SOON
You may be aware that an Archive CD Books partner has been operating in the Netherlands for some time now. Of course all his old books are written in Dutch and so were all his book descriptions. Well after a sterling effort he has now been able to provide us with some English language descriptions and we are working through his catalogue to see what we should put into our catalogue for an initial offering. If you know anyone who is researching their roots in the Netherlands please pass on the news but do make sure they realize all the books are in the Dutch language.
6 FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY AND OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:
This is a quiet time for Family History Societies so no news to pass on.
Don't forget we can help your group to spread the news. Send us an e-mail.
7 NEWS & GOSSIP:
If any of you have genealogy related questions of a general nature - or something specifically related to Archive CD Books - we'd be glad to publish your question in this newsletter to tap into the enormous fund of knowledge which I know is out there.
RECOGNITION!
We have now supplied the Archives of Grimsby with our Rural Directory of the Electoral District of Lincoln, Ontario - 1929. (It's now available from them and from the Toronto Public Library.) Justification for our saving it from oblivion I think. :-) (A long story!)
We have been glad to continue a tradition started in the UK by giving a free copy of our very popular, Winslow Papers CD to the administrator of one of the Atlantic provinces Genealogy News-Lists in recognition of her contributions to successful genealogy research.
Her comment, "Thank you SO MUCH for the CD. It arrived on Wed. I can't wait to sit down this weekend and go thru it."
We'd like to take a line here to congratulate and thank Gordon A. Watts and Muriel M. Davidson for their tireless efforts, for the benefit of all of us, in working to obtain the release of the 1911 Canadian census records. If you subscribe to a genealogy news list I'm sure you have seen their unflagging reports and exhortations for support. Let's all wish them a well deserved holiday and a smoother ride in the New Year.
Muriel has indeed said that the release of the 1911 Census would be the best Christmas present she could ask for. Well, not quite Muriel, but perhaps a late New Year gift?
COMMENTS FROM CUSTOMERS:
"I received the Col. Duguid CD this morning. (Official History of the Canadian Forces in The Great War, CA0098.) That was really good considering the Christmas post. The CD is wonderful. Although I haven't even really started on it yet, I have already been able to search and find things I am interested in .......
The maps have come out really well and I saw the part maps in jpeg which are clearly labelled for printing out." Kate.
