* Early Days at Port Ryerse
CA0156: $9.50
You will find this book is available, absolutely free, in our Downloads area. This is a version on CD if you do not want to download the file, or would prefer to have your copy on a CD presented in our normal format.
The booklet tells the story of the settlement and development of this Simcoe county town from the point of view of a descendant of the first registered settler. This booklet is not dated but we estimate it was published in the 1910 to 1920 era. The author George J Ryerse was born in 1851 and so was well situated in time to have access to both the earliest family recollections as well as the development of the port into the age of simpler transportation and greater political stability. Most of the book is concerned with the physical and social development of the town but towards the end Mr. Ryerse also gives us some interesting biographical sketches. There is also a 2 page map of the port, which is not dated but appears to have about the same extents as another early map we have seen showing the original plan for the town. We have formatted the text for searches using the "Search" or "Find" features in the freely available PDF reader programs.
* A Compendium of the Shipping of Yarmouth, N.S. (1761 - 1902)
CA0158: $40.00
This is a never before published compendium of the standard historical works recording the shipping activities of Yarmouth Nova Scotia in the time when it was recognized as a World Class seaport.
We are bringing you this wonderful collection through a cooperative project with the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives, 22 Collins St., Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. We've taken the opportunity to include not only the usual sources of information but also to add a number of very relevant extracts from two other well known histories of Yarmouth. Altogether this CD contains over 800 pages of facts, figures, stories and just plain history.
While the ships are the stars of this compilation, the people who owned and sailed them do not take a back seat by any means. Our additions to the materials also expand the field of interest to cover ancillary port activities such as shipbuilding, maintenance and insurance, including the people who owned and ran them. There are hundreds of reports of the disasters, and sometimes worse, which happened on these ships as they voyaged to every corner of the trading world. Stories of unbelievable endurance, of unfeeling masters, of crews who decided to mutiny and of those who were snatched from the jaws of death. You could read this as a novel, but it's all true.
All the components of this compilation have been formatted for text searches using the "Find" or search features of the freely available PDF interpreter applications. A “Sampler“ is available on our web site. This description edited for length - see web site for the full text including a list of the books included on the CD.
* Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, a Sequel to Campbells History - 1888
CA0159: $23.00
It's clear from the subtitle of this work that there is some history behind its original production. The explanation of this is given by the author in his Preface and I can do no better than to quote that preface here: Quote: There is extant a copy of "A History of the County of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, by the Rev. J. R. Campbell," published in 1876, where, beneath the printed testimonial preceding its title page, occur these words over the date of Sept.2, 1885 :"When this book was first offered to the public, I somewhat hastily passed over its pages; and then, and at other times since, it seemed to me strange that so many inaccuracies should have escaped the critical notice of the gentlemen whose names are attached to the above testimonial. But having more carefully examined the book within the past week, I have taken the liberty of making some marginal notes where it seemed to be of some importance that the errors in the text should be corrected." A few months afterward, a second examination of the book led to additional notes, which at length extended so far beyond the capacity of the margins of its pages and other blank spaces as to reach a volume nearly as large as the contents of the book they were reviewing; and toward the end of December, 1885, the Author concluded that it was his duty in some measure to repair the errors of omission and commission to which his notes referred, by the publication of this book. ......... End Quote: George Stayley Brown's book follows the logical outline of a history of a particular area (for other than First Nations races), starting with it's discovery by Europeans and proceeding chronologically through the years until it reaches a period close to that of it's publication in 1888. In a partial defense of the "European" bias of this approach I should also say that the author deals with the early history of the area in some detail and does not gloss over the early interaction of the first Nations peoples and the settlers as is so often the case. In fact an attention to detail characterizes the whole of this book giving, where it can, the actual names and land grants of the early pioneers as well as those instrumental in settling the early centers of population. This was, also an important area for the resettlement of the ousted Empire Loyalists from the forming USA and Brown gives plenty of information about the circumstances of these people's extradition and the lives they started to build for themselves in Nova Scotia. In some cases the genealogical records of some families will be found as will the significant military history of what was a fairly turbulent area. All in all this is a great book for anyone who wants to know about the formation, and early history, of this important maritime area. While this maritime history has not been mentioned previously it is not because it is lacking, in fact extracts from this book have been included in our Compendium of Yarmouth Shipping, CA0158, a CD we believe holds the most complete maritime history of this once World Class shipping centre. This book has been formatted for text searches using the "Find" or search features of the freely available PDF interpreter applications. To give you a further feel for what is on this CD we have made a "Sampler" from it which is freely available to you on our Downloads page.
* Yarmouth Past and Present, A Book of Reminiscences - 1902
CA0160: $35.00
This slightly unusual history of Yarmouth Nova Scotia was "compiled" by J. Murray Lawson who's other claim to literary fame comes from his publications of the Records of Shipping of Yarmouth (see our Compendium of Yarmouth Shipping CA0158). Mr. Lawson was the son of Alexander Lawson the "owner and proprietor" of The Yarmouth Herald, and it is clear that much of the content of this book has been gleaned from the records of that newspaper. But it is exactly that fact which gives this book its unique and interesting slant on the history of the area. For one thing, news papers have always been more interested in people than things so there is a lot more of the activities of the inhabitants of Yarmouth than in a more conventional history which would tend to concentrate more on the things that people leave behind them. The over 600 pages of this book are organized into various "departments" ranging from General through Fires, Lightning Storms and Accidents to Churches, Lands and Buildings to Incorporations, Societies Etc. Of course it is impossible to bypass the most important industry / activity of the area so there are also departments dedicated to Shipping, particularly to telling the tales of it's loss, of the people who owned and sailed the ships and with the development of the "steamer" which was just beginning to take over from sail as this book was being compiled. The 66 illustrations, some of which are panoramas of early Yarmouth, should be fascinating for anyone who is familiar with Yarmouth's modern development. This book has been formatted for text searches using the "Find" or search features of the freely available PDF interpreter applications. To give you a further feel for what is on this CD we have made a "Sampler" from it which is freely available to you on our Downloads page. This description edited for length - see web site for the full text

BRITISH CENSUS - NEW RELEASES:
THE YORKSHIRE 1851 CENSUS IS BEING MADE AVAILABLE IN AFFORDABLE SECTIONS ONLY
Yorkshire is such a large county that your ancestors are likely to be within a particular area or two, and therefore we have made the census available by districts, on 1, 2 or 3 CDs at affordable prices. As usual with these notoriously difficult to read census pages of 1851, we have taken great care in the scanning, and have employed image enhancement to give the best possible results. (This results in large files, and hence more CDs than our competitors - but we think that the results are worth it! We work UP TO A QUALITY rather than down to a price.)When viewing the pages on CD you can zoom in and in to see the finest detail. On some of the really faded and hard to read pages, then you will see a gray background - that is part of the image enhancement process we use to make the really faded pages easy to read.

BRITISH BOOKS - NEW RELEASE:
We frequently shorten a book’s descriptions for this newsletter. Check our website catalogue for the full description.
* Board of Stamps - Apprenticeship Books
GB1337: $60.30
IR1/1-19 City (Town) Registers October 1711 to July 1754.; R1/41-51 Country Registers May 1710 to August 1754
The Registers were kept by the Board of Stamps as a record of the moneys received in payment of the duty on apprentices' indentures. In addition to the sums received the registers record the names, addresses and trades of the masters, the names of the apprentices and the dates of the articles. Until the year 1752 the names of the apprentices' parents are given, but after that year very rarely. These are fabulous resources for historians and genealogists. The records show London Masters taking on boys (and girls!) from the City itself and from further afield, too.
