3 NEW CANADIAN RELEASES:
* Lovell's Canadian Dominion Directory - 1871
Other than the government's official census this is probably the most exhaustive single source of information on the inhabitants of "The Dominion," and the two closely allied but still independent Provinces of Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, in this period. In the Preface to the directory John Lovell, the editor and publisher, sets out the background to the conception and production of this mammoth work and from this it can be seen that his objective was to identify as many individuals as possible in the 6 Provinces. He did, however, appear to limit himself to listing only the "heads" of families and independent residents such as borders and roomers. Unlike so many contemporary directories, it includes people from all "walks" of life so laborers, farmers, tradesmen, merchants, "professionals," military, clergy, politicians, consuls and even representatives of the Crown all get "equal billing." Also in the alphabetically arranged lists are businesses and stores, usually showing the proprietor or manager as well as the address of the business. Frequently the business proprietors and managers are also listed in their own homes as well. Each listing for individuals gives the full name the occupation(s), the street address and an indication of the type of residence such as "h" for house, or "bds" for boards. The "commercial" listings give the name of the business, the nature of the business, the person to contact and the street address.
This is an enormous book of in excess of 2,500 pages. In order to make it more financially accessible to those who are only interested in one or two provinces we have published our reproduction in individual sections as well as the whole book.
We are indebted to the Historical Society of Ottawa for kindly loaning us this early directory so we could reproduce it for you on CD. Please join with us to thank them for their public spirited generosity in allowing us to make this rare and valuable book more accessible.

* Nova Scotia Eastern District Telephone Directory 1922
CA0177-A: $15.00
What is there to say about a Telephone Directory? This one lists subscribers in the Eastern districts of Nova Scotia (not including Cape Breton) giving their name, the type of service, i.e., residence, office, store, etc., and where the telephone is located. The location may be a place name or - in larger communities - a street name and number, and, of course, it gives their telephone number.
This directory is as useful for locating people in 1922 as the modern phone book is for locating them today. There are some difference to todays directory however. For each exchange the name of the person in charge is given and the location of ìPublic Pay Stationsî is shown. A significant difference is that each exchange lists itís operating hours. A few subscribers were lucky enough to get a ìcontinuousî service, most had to watch the clock - and no calls during Sunday lunch!
Please see our web site description for a list of Exchanges and Districts. 120 pages of listings, we estimate about 5,600 numbers.
We have configured the book for computer searches of the text using a PDF interpreter application such as Adobe Readerô V4 or better. We have provided a free downloadable sampler of the book on our Downloads web page.

U.S.A. BOOKS - NEW RELEASES
* A Genealogical Dictionary of The First Settlers of New England (Author: James SavagePub. Date: 1860)
US0205: $34.40
Even a hundred and forty years after publication, Savage's four-volume set remains the starting point for most research problems in seventeenth-century New England. Savage applied his acute analytical skills to every family that he could find in the first, second and third generations of settlement.
Savage scoured every record available to him in the Boston area, and corresponded copiously with historians and genealogists all over New England in an attempt to make his compendium as complete as possible. Some correspondents were less diligent than others, so the coverage in the areas away from eastern Massachusetts can be spotty. Nevertheless, no other single source covers the first century of New England settlement so broadly.
Savage has been superseded in a limited portion of his range by the Great Migration Study Project, but that effort has at this date covered somewhat less than half of the immigrant generation, and will never cover the second and third generations in the way that Savage did. Savage was in some ways a precursor to the Jacobus generation of genealogists, exploding myths with great gusto, and taking care not to confuse and combine in one sketch records that belong to two or more men. His sketches are often relieved by his personal comments, stemming from his Victorian political and religious sensibilities.

* History of the Town and City of Gloucester, Cape Ann, Massachusetts (Author: James R. Pringle)
US0201: $17.20
In the best traditions of nineteenth-century local history, this volume provides both a narrative and a topical history of an important early Massachusetts maritime community. The history is interspersed with biographical compilations of early settlers, soldiers and sailors, and businessmen. The early chapters of this history take a chronological approach, beginning with the Indians and the pre-settlement explorers, and coming down to the late nineteenth century. Chapter Four includes biographical sketches of settlers in town by 1700, while Chapter Five has a similar list for settlers between 1700 and 1750.The chronological chapters are followed by several more chapters covering such topics as schools and military service. The most useful parts of these chapters are two detailed lists, one for Gloucester soldiers in the Civil War, and one for sailors in the same conflict. The book concludes with an appendix of biographical sketches of Gloucester businessmen at the time of publication. Summary by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG for Archive CD Books USA
* History of North Brookfield, Massachusetts (Author: J.H. Temple)
US0203: $28.70
This volume is more than just a history of the town of North Brookfield. Temple has also included extensive extracts from the town records of Brookfield, the parent town, and has compiled genealogical accounts of most of the earliest families of the town.North Brookfield was not set off from Brookfield as a separate town until 1812. Had Temple chosen to cover just the history of this town, he would have had only seventy-five years in the nineteenth century to write about. Fortunately, he decided to dig back into the history of the parent town, thus taking the story back into the middle of the seventeenth century. While he did not include in this volume a complete transcript of the early records of Brookfield, he did scour the state and town records to find many interesting documents. These are not just town orders about ringing the swine and electing the constable. There are also militia lists, tax lists, petitions and other documents that include information on town inhabitants at all social levels. When combined with the genealogical supplement at the end of the book, this style of including a selection of records provides the researcher with a broad perspective on the entire population of the town. Summary by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG for Archive CD Books USA
* History of the Town of Palmer, Massachusetts (Author: J.H. Temple, Pub. Date: 1889)
US0206: $22.90
This volume is more than just a history of the town of Palmer. Temple has also included extensive extracts from the town records and has compiled genealogical accounts of most of the earliest families. Palmer was established as a district in 1752, having previously existed as a plantation known as "The Elbows." It was then made a town in 1775. Palmer has written a narrative history, interwoven with extensive extracts from the records of the plantation, district and town. These are not just town orders, there are also militia lists, tax lists, petitions and other documents that include information on town inhabitants at all social levels. When combined with the genealogical supplement at the end of the book, this style of including a selection of records provides the researcher with a broad perspective on the entire population of the town. * Historical and Genealogical Miscellany (Author: John E. Stillwell, M.D)
US0209: $32.10
Data Relating to the Settlement and Settlers of New York and New Jersey (Volumes I and II) and a Historical and Genealogical Miscellany: Early Settlers of New Jersey and their Descendants (Volumes III, IV and V.)
These five volumes, two providing a wide range of colonial source material and three presenting compiled genealogies constitute, at the same time, an essential reference work for Monmouth County, New Jersey, and an important broader source for the early years of New Jersey, New York and New England. The author began the work as a study of the Stillwell family, but soon discovered that he needed to broaden his research to many related and associated families, and so ended up with a collection of materials on many records and families of Monmouth County. He also went beyond this to include data on these same families in their earlier residences in New York and New England. Many of the early residents of the county came from Long Island and Rhode Island. The bulk of the material in the first two volumes consists of transcripts of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century church records, town records and land records for Monmouth County, New Jersey, and for its two earliest towns, Shrewsbury and Middletown. There are, in addition, court records from Staten Island, from the West Riding of Yorkshire on Long Island (covering what are now Staten Island and Kings County), from Burlington County, New Jersey, and from Cape May, New Jersey. There are also church and census records from Staten Island.
In the final three volumes of the set, Stillwell sets forth compiled genealogies for about fifty Monmouth County families. In most cases he provides details on the arrival of the families in North America, and their earlier history before coming to New Jersey. Especially in the early generations, these sketches have much biographical material, in most instances supported by extracts from, or references to, contemporary source material. In some instances there are even extracts from English records giving the origins of some families before arriving in the New World. Summary by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG for Archive CD Books USA.
* A Dictionary of Law (First Edition: 1891. Author: Henry Campbell Black, M.A.)
US0211: $34.40
Containing Definitions of the Terms and Phrases of American and English Jurisprudence, Ancient and Modern
As a bonus it also includes a free copy of the Second Edition (1910) on the same CD. Every genealogist, regardless of their time and place of interest, must have a copy of Black's Law Dictionary in their library. Legal terminology differs from place to place and time to time, and successful genealogical research depends on the clear understanding of this changing terminology. For genealogists the earlier editions of this book retain their value, since they have the information on older law, especially the English feudal law, which is essential for the interpretation of documents from the American colonial period and from the England that the colonists left. While these volumes contain just the sort of legal verbiage that one would expect, there are many other reasons for consulting these volumes. Terms from legal Latin and legal French are included, as well as words and phrases from Scottish and Welsh law. There are dozens of Latin and French terms of kinship, which appear in older wills and lawsuits. There are definitions from the lexicon of agriculture, such as "treet," meaning fine wheat, and "tremesium," meaning the season or time of sowing summer corn.
In the second edition, also included here, Black included more citations to law reports and case law, in support of his definitions. He also added many more terms of medical jurisprudence.

* Medical Lexicon. A Dictionary of Medical Science (Author: Robley Dunglison, M.D., LL.D.)
US0226: $22.90
This concise and factual volume is far more than just a dictionary, providing a wide range of medical information as it was known at the end of the Civil War. The author has added much to this second edition of his work, and has designed it to be "A French as well as an English medical lexicon." There are many areas of terminology included here, included anatomy, chemistry, herbal medicine, pharmacology, and many more. Latin and French forms of many words are given, and Latin and Greek etymologies are also frequent. There are also unexpected data sets dispersed through the volume in their proper alphabetic place, such as spas and health resorts, both in Europe and in the United States, or the terminology used in various magical systems of healing. Many of the medicines and medical conditions covered by this volume have multiple names, sometimes dozens, in England, French and Latin. Each of these names appears in its proper place in the alphabet, with a cross-reference to the appropriate main entry, where one finds not only the definition but a complete compilation of all the variant names. This feature especially will be very helpful in understanding causes of death as they may be entered in various public and private records. In many instances, the entries carry on for a page or more, providing information that one would expect to find in an encyclopedia rather than a dictionary. For example, the entry for "Artery" covers a page and a half, while the entry for "Cinchona" and its derivatives spans more than a page and describes the many types and uses of the bark of this tree. * The Loyalists of Massachusetts and the Other Side of the American Revolution (Author: James H. Stark, Pages: 608, Pub. Date: 1910)
US0216: $22.90
The author, sympathetic to the Loyalists, presents a history of the American Revolution in Massachusetts, from the perspective of the Loyalists. To this he appends about a hundred biographical and genealogical sketches of Massachusetts Loyalists, tracing their lives into England and Nova Scotia. Stark was a strong Anglophile, and the historical section begins with the settlement of Massachusetts, presents much background to the Revolution, and then, after a lengthy section on the revolutionary period itself, goes on to apply his antirevolutionary themes to the War of 1812 and to the Civil War. Throughout both the historical section and the biographical & genealogical section, he employs a number of terms dismissive of those who opposed England, calling them "disunionists," and referring to the "Sons of Liberty" as the "Sons of Despotism." He delights in including in his sketches stories of the outrages said by him to have been committed by the latter. The biographical and genealogical sketches begin with the male-line ancestor of the subject of the sketch, and then trace the line to the Loyalist himself, with some biographical information along the way. The story of the life of the Loyalist is then presented, generally with an exposition of the actions which made him objectionable to the revolutionary side, and his fate after leaving Massachusetts. Some of the sketches are augmented by two additional features, the inclusion of transcripts of official or family letters from the revolutionary period, and a list of the estates confiscated from the Loyalists (with specific reference to the Suffolk County deeds). Summary by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG for Archive CD Books USA
Note: CA0182 Loyalists of America and Their Times from 1620 to 1816 makes a great companion piece.
* Old Churches, Ministers and Families of Virginia (Author: Bishop [William] Meade)
US0236: $32.10
This history of the Episcopal Church in Virginia focusses on a narrative of each parish in the state, with biographical and genealogical details on many of the early ministers and prominent members of that church. Complete transcripts of many colonial documents are included for most of the parishes. Like so many other nineteenth-century antiquaries, Bishop Meade conducted his research through a combination of onsite visits and correspondence with other antiquaries. In the preparation of this history, which was first published as a series of eighty newspaper articles, he attempted to locate and examine the surviving vestry books for each parish. In some cases he saw these records himself, and in other instances he relied on reports by others. Most of the articles have sprinkled through them extensive extracts and abstracts from colonial documents, including, in addition to the vestry books, court records, private letters and monumental inscriptions. Many of these records had not been published then, although many have since been placed in print in more modern and comprehensive editions. There are undoubtedly records here, especially among the letters and inscriptions, which have not been published elsewhere and which have subsequently been lost or destroyed. Most of the genealogical material is presented in long footnotes. Although this material is not documented according to modern standards, the author would often have obtained the information from family members born in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries, who were in a position to provide reliable data on the more recent generations. These genealogies will provide solid clues for further research. Summary by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG for Archive CD Books USA

Archive CD Books Canada has booked to be a vendor at two Family History Society shows this spring. The details are in the next section of the newsletter. It is expensive for us to take part in these shows so we have to be selective, but if you know of a show - say within 500 Km of Ottawa - which you think we should support don't hesitate to tell us. We know you like to see what you are buying and we love to come out and meet you!
