1  WELCOME:

Welcome to the Archive CD Books Canada December newsletter.

This newsletter will be published whenever we have enough information to make it worth your while reading, but that usually means there will be about one a month.

Remember this Newsletter is published for you so if you think we’re missing something important drop me a line to Malcolm@ArchiveCDBooks.ca .

Newsletters work best when they get a good circulation.  We’re doing our best to let people know about it but you could help us along by mentioning it to your genealogy buddies and generally spreading the word.

All newsletter administration messages should be e-mailed to Books@ArchiveCDBooks.ca

In the Subject line you may write:

2  WHAT’S IN THE NEWSLETTER:

Arriving, as it does, during this rather frenetic time of year in many people's lives you may have to put this newsletter in your "to do" file until you have time to read it fully.  Our international partners have distributed no less than 74 newly released titles in the last month.  Add that to the 7 new Canadian releases and this turns out to be a jumbo edition of our newsletter.

Because of the unusually large number of titles I have drastically cut down on the book's descriptions here, so do remember to visit our on-line catalogue to read  the complete description for any book that interests you.  We also have free samplers of our new Canadian products.

--------------------------

To find a book on our web site http://www.archivecdbooks.ca take a note of the catalogue number - or use the “copy” function - go to the web site, click on the “Search Page” link and enter, or “paste,” the number into the “Product Number” box.  Hit “Search” and then “More” and you will be in a position to reread the description or to place your order.

Alternatively you can browse through the catalogue using the drop down headings lists.  We have tried to multi-list books where they correspond to more than one category but consider the possibility that the subject you are looking for may be under a related heading.

There is frequently more information about the books available on the web site than that which is included in the following descriptions.  All prices in $Cdn.

3  NEW CANADIAN RELEASES:

*  Shanty, Forest and River Life.

CA0244:  $13.00

The title of this book actually continues, ".. in the Backwoods of Canada" and it was published in 1884, the year after the death of its author.  The author seems to have had a preference for not mentioning names (at least not in full) so the book's author credit is to "The author of Three Months Amongst the Moose."  It is clear however that the author was Joshua Fraser, a one time Presbyterian minister who lost his church standing through a fondness for alcohol.

This book is packed with reminiscences and anecdotes about backwoods life in the upper reaches of the Ottawa valley, then Upper Canada (now Ontario.)  The main theme of the book is an examination of the life of the loggers engaged in harvesting timber in these un-populated backwoods but there are also plenty of excursions into other tales of the woods as well as several chapters about the spring "drive" to get the winters logs down to Quebec.  In its time it would be an important text book for anyone (who could read) venturing into the backwoods.  Today it provides a wonderful insight into the life of a ìlumbermanî working in the Ottawa river valley in a well defined period.

We have made the book fully text searchable and enhanced the search with our FastFind technology although I would expect most readers to simply read the book for the pleasure of it.  I say this because all the people who worked on making the reproduction of this book finished up reading it.  Its stories are well told and it takes you back to a life we can only imagine now.

*  The Gilbert Family History,

This is a family history "compiled and edited" by Geoffrey Gilbert, and privately published by him in the 1950's.  Mr. Gilbert adopted a somewhat unusual format for organizing his history by combining elements of both the "Ancestors" and "Descendants" methodologies and then focusing the histories on his Great Great Grandparents, identifying both their ancestors and their descendants.

By selecting this particular generation as his focus he allows himself to concentrate his history on the family's story within North America specifically ignoring the histories of those in Britain where most of the families originated from.  This reduces the number of G-G-Grandparents for consideration, from the potential 16, to 12 individuals.  This number is further reduced, by the circumstance of some of the ancestral unions, to 9 individual / family histories.

The set of volumes we have acquired actually provides the histories of only 8 G-G-Grandparents and our research has failed to show any evidence that the ninth volume was actually ever written.  The identities of the 8 documented G-G-Grandparents are:

Vol 1: Nancy Treadway (1776-1865), mother of Nancy Maria Moffatt

Vol 2: Melvin Moffatt (1774-1857), father of Nancy Maria Moffatt

Vol 3: Daniel Britton (1773-1827), father of Daniel Freeman Britton

Vol 4: Sally Wood (1780-1862), mother of Daniel Freeman Britton

Vol 5: William Forbes (1778-1833), father of Eliza Forbes.

Vol 6: Ezra Holton (1785-1858), father of Luther Hamilton Holton.

Vol 7: Solomon Gilbert (1755-1829), father of Moses Haskell Gilbert

Vol 8: Thankful Haskell (1745-1841), mother of Moses Haskell Gilbert.

4  COMING SOON:

We are still spoiled for choice of wonderful old books to make into CDs for you so once again I'm going to duck giving you the titles of next months releases.  I will tell you that your response to our Gt. War reproductions has made up our minds to re-publish more in that line.  There is also a set of four books by a single author about the Atlantic Provinces that I have been meaning to bring to you all year.

So, I'm afraid you will just have to be patient until January.
